Review of the “Pocket Guide to the Mammals of Costa Rica”

The Pocket Guide to the Mammals of Costa Rica is a comprehensive and exquisitely well-illustrated guide to the mammals of Costa Rica.

Well-organized and easy to read, it is illustrated with a combination of outstanding photographs by top wildlife photographers and Fiona Reid’s unsurpassed drawings. Where key characters exist, they are well-illustrated. Unfortunately, some bats are nearly impossible to identify in the field, distinguishable only through genetic analysis. However, to the extent possible the authors have provided up-to-date taxonomy in a rapidly changing field, especially challenging for bats. This is the first guide to cover all of Costa Rica’s mammal species, over 200! It includes 60 full-color plates and more than 100 photographs.

Fiona Reid has authored and illustrated numerous field guides, including the Peterson Field Guide To Mammals Of North America, and is famous for her illustrations of bats worldwide. She is also an outstanding field naturalist. Her co-author, Gianfranco Gómez Zamora, is a Costa Rican naturalist and tour guide with 20 years of experience.
